Why should I Receive Lymphatic Drainage Before Surgery?

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) can be an effective treatment modality to accelerate healing post surgery.

So why should i receive MLD before surgery??

I'm glad you asked;

MLD pre-surgery helps to prepare the body for the trauma of surgery. (Yes, the body considers surgery a trauma). It does this by stimulating the lymphatic system to remove cellular waste products, bacteria, viruses, excess proteins, excess fluid and any other unwanted substances from the spaces between your cells, essentially cleaning the tissues. The lymph vessels then move the unwanted substances to the lymph nodes where it is filtered and cleaned by lymphocytes (white blood cells, part of the immune system manufactured inside the lymph nodes), and delivering the filtered fluid to the circulatory system to be eliminated from the body.

So what's the big deal?

Although this process happens naturally, (the lymph vessels pump lymph at a resting rate of about 3-8 times per minute), MLD can accelerate the movement of lymph to 30 times per minute. This optimizes the cellular environment throughout the body, making the body better equipped to deal with the upcoming surgery. The effects of MLD treatment pre-surgery reduce the risk of post-surgical complications such as infection, excessive swelling, bruising and scar tissue.

An additional benefit of receiving MLD prior to surgery is the deeply relaxing effect it has on the nervous system. By helping shift the nervous system into a more relaxed state, the body will be even more prepared to handle the traumatic changes caused by surgery.

Three or more consecutive treatments the week before surgery has been shown to yield the best results. Wu Wei Healing Arts offers a surgery package that includes 3 sessions the week prior to surgery. Please browse the service and fees sections for more information.

Good luck with your surgery!!
